Claire uses her medical skills to escape Castle Leoch, and with help from Jamie, tends to a sick child. Later, during the evening entertainment, Claire listens to a tale that offers her hope for freedom. Claire plots to escape during the Castle's Gathering ceremony, but encounters with Jamie and a drunken Dougal alter her plans. Claire goes along on the MacKenzies' trip to collect rents, and witnesses Dougal using Jamie's scars to elicit sympathy for the cause of the Jacobites. Later, she realizes a momentous event in Scottish history is coming up fast. Claire is thrown for a loop when her surprise meeting with a British general is interrupted by the dangerous Captain Jack Randall, who suspects she is harboring secrets. Claire enters into a forced marriage with Jamie, but soon begins to experience deeper feelings for him. Claire attempts to adapt to her new marriage, while Frank undertakes a desperate search for his missing wife. Later, a fate-changing opportunity presents itself to Claire, placing her in an emotional quandary. An attempt to rescue Claire from Black Jack Randall is mounted by Jamie and the Highlanders. With the arrival of the Duke of Sandringham, Jamie hopes the price on his head will be lifted, while Claire cares for an abandoned child. As Claire and Geillis are put on trial for witchcraft, Jamie is able to rescue Claire, who has unearthed a secret from Geillis' past. Claire and Jamie are reunited and head to his family home, where old animosities between Jamie and his sister, Jenny, are rekindled. Problems arise with the return of a redcoat deserter from Jamie's past, and Jamie and Ian join The Watch, while Claire tends to Jenny. Claire and Jenny head off to save Jamie from the redcoat captors and meet up with Murtagh, who joins them. The trio employ unusual tactics to get word to Jamie. At Wentworth Prison, Jamie's execution day approaches, while Claire and the Highlanders contemplate a rescue plan. Later, Jamie receives an unsettling visit from Black Jack. A risky escape attempt is engineered to free Jamie, and he's taken to a nearby monastery, where Claire attempts to nurse him back to health, both his mind and body.
